ON SITE WITH GREENBELT AT LIONTHORN, FALKIRK
Think of Falkirk and you might immediately think of the Antonine Wall, the Battle of Falkirk in 1746, Callendar House, or more recently the Falkirk Wheel.
On the southern edge of this historic town, almost within walking distance of the latter two landmarks, Greenbelt has responsibility for the management and maintenance of the public opens spaces on Lionthorn. This large development was started around 2002 with three different developers - Barratt, Bryant, and Persimmon. The Persimmon development consists of three separate phases, two by Persimmon, and one each by Bett and Scotia.
With over 400 houses by different builders, it is very useful to have a good working relationship with a group that can represent all customers. On Lionthorn, the Residents Association is very active and liaises effectively with us on a number of issues. Its Chairman, Richard Mclennan, has had meetings at our Glasgow HQ and organises an annual walkabout on the site with us.
Customers at Lionthorn were first billed by us in 2003, with the final phase being billed in 2008. So, a few years on, how is the public open space establishing?

This year Alex Middleton, our Managing Director, Fergus Cumming, our area manager, and our contractor met with Richard for the annual tour. Remedial works such as gap planting were noted, and while there were no major issues, several minor snagging matters were recorded. | Improvement works have since been instructed. This is part of our on-going commitment to customers, and of course if anyone has an issue they would like us to investigate, our free phone line is always available on 0800 028 1749 |
![]() | Also discussed was the effectiveness of the sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS). This is naturalising well, and appears to be effective. There are also a number of works being undertaken which will ultimately ensure the whole development is finally finished being built. Paths are being completed (with associated landscaping works), and the kick pitch laid out. This work is being undertaken by the local authority and will be maintained by them thereafter. Overall, the landscaped areas at Lionthorn are now beginning to mature and produce some lovely displays. Rest assured that we want all our customers to enjoy these features and be happy having such a place in which to live. |
