West Craigs, Hamilton, Lanarkshire
West Craigs has been developed by a consortium of Bett Homes, Kier Homes and Taylor Woodrow to the south of the town on the site of the old Udston mine.
This 1000 unit development was completed in 2008. Greenbelt initially provided consultation to the consortium on the condition of the trees and habitats within the retained pockets of existing woodland on the site. In 2002 Greenbelt was then commissioned to design a landscape master plan for the site.
Once planning approval was given in 2003, Greenbelt began planting new woodland (including an 18 hectare new oak woodland), avenue planting, grass seeding and installed play areas on behalf of the consortium.
All areas of planting are flourishing and residents are now happily contributing to the up-keep of their new open spaces through Greenbelt's Greenspace Arrangement.
Site achievements since 2003:
- play zone and further equipped play area
- fenced kick about pitch
- new and existing woodland
- network of culverted water- courses connecting to main gorge
- 175m long filtration swale
